Heerema Marine Contractors is proud to have been a key partner in the redevelopment of the Tyra field, Denmark’s largest gas field operated by TotalEnergies. In a historic achievement, our SSCV Sleipnir successfully installed the 17,082 mt, the weight of approximately 2 Eiffel towers, Tyra II TEG process module, setting a new world record for the heaviest crane lift ever performed at sea.
About the Tyra Redevelopment Program
The Tyra field is the largest gas condensate field in the Danish Sector of the North Sea, located 120 nautical miles west of Esbjerg in the Danish sector of the North Sea have been in production for thirty years and the facilities are suffering from seabed subsidence. TotalEnergies E&P Denmark planned an extensive redevelopment program on the Tyra fields. The scope of work was divided in 5 campaigns.
Removal Campaign
June 2020 - The Tyra Redevelopment Project began with the removal of redundant facilities in Q2 2020. Using Sleipnir, Heerema safely dismantled and transported outdated topsides, bridges, and a jacket to shore for recycling.
The First Installation Campaign
September 2020 - During the first installation campaign, Sleipnir installed the new TEG (~6,600 mt) and TEH (~4,200 mt) jackets along with their piles. This marked the foundation for the new Tyra II infrastructure.
The Second Installation Campaign
August 2021 - In the following year, the focus was on the Tyra East complex. Sleipnir and her crew installed the TEB (1,920 mt), TEC, and TEE (~2,600 mt) topsides, along with their connecting bridges. Notably, this campaign featured a simultaneous dual-crane lift, demonstrating the vessel’s unique capability to perform complex heavy lifts with both cranes in tandem.
The Third Installation Campaign
April 2022 - In the third campaign, Sleipnir Installed the Tyra West modules TWB, TWC, and TWE, and their bridges, as well as the TEH accommodation platform, a total of 8,996 mt combined. This phase further advanced the structural completion of the Tyra II platform.
The Fourth Installation Campaign
October 2022 - The fourth and final installation campaign included the record-breaking lift of the 17,000 metric ton TEG process module, along with the flare and remaining bridges (~1,550 mt. This milestone marked the culmination of Heerema’s offshore scope for the Tyra Redevelopment
The last phase of the Tyra redevelopment project was successfully completed in the autumn of 2022, after executing three offshore campaigns (2020-2022) using Heerema's SSCV Sleipnir. A total of twenty components were removed (~16,000 mt) and six new topsides and four new bridges were installed.
Delivering the future of energy
The completion marks a major step forward in the Tyra Redevelopment Project, which aims to modernize and future-proof Denmark’s energy infrastructure. The lift was the result of years of meticulous planning and coordination between Heerema, TotalEnergies, and over 260 offshore professionals.
This achievement not only demonstrates Heerema’s engineering excellence and operational precision but also reinforces our commitment to delivering complex offshore projects safely and efficiently.
Lars Bo Christiansen, Project Director Deputy for TotalEnergies EP Denmark A/S: 'Finally, Tyra II is in place. The team has been preparing this world record lift for years, and it was truly impressive to see how the planning culminated in just six hours when the world’s largest crane vessel Sleipnir helped us to put the enormous new process module into final position. I’m very pleased that we executed this crucial lift ahead of schedule in our new project plan. Only three more lifts to complete and then our new Tyra II will be in its final shape.
