Our Floater Parametric Tool helps to commercialise floating wind by delivering a better understanding of design drivers in floater design.

Challenge

Commercializing floating wind requires a better understanding of design drivers in floater design. This includes assessing the effect of design choices on project logistics, construction and installation.

Actions

We built an in-house shell to rapidly generate floater designs and meshes, assess hydrodynamics with WAMIT/OrcaWave, set-up tendon design, perform a modal analysis and calculate the dynamic response for given design load case.

Benefits

We can perform sensitivity studies for existing floater designs and analyze the trade-off between in-situ performance and logistical, construction and installation costs. It can also be used to optimize a floater for predefined design parameters by using, for example, a genetic algorithm.

Solution

We have created a tool that has been thoroughly tested and the designs from the tool have been compared to existing and open-source configurations.
