With the cutting of the first steel, Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) in Vlissingen has officially kicked off construction of the jacket for the offshore platform IJmuiden Ver Beta. This milestone marks the first visible step in creating one of the largest steel structures ever built for offshore wind energy in the Netherlands.
Proud Dutch Craftsmanship
Heerema Fabrication Group has been selected by the consortium Seatrium and GE Vernova to fabricate a total of three jackets as part of TenneT’s 2GW program. The first project, the 90-meter-high and 43-meter-wide jacket for IJmuiden Ver Beta, will weigh over 10,000 tons upon completion. The jacket forms the robust foundation of the platform, which will play a central role in efficiently transporting renewable energy from sea to shore in the coming years.
In addition to fabrication by HFG, sister company Heerema Marine Contractors will handle the offshore installation of the jackets. Together, the two companies combine their expertise to deliver an optimal result—from fabrication to final placement at sea.
Contribution to the Energy Transition
The jackets constructed by HFG are essential for anchoring the platforms to the seabed and ensuring stability under the harshest North Sea conditions. IJmuiden Ver Beta, an offshore wind farm with a capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), is expected to be commissioned in 2029 (1GW) and 2032 (1GW) by operator Zeevonk, a joint venture of Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
Richard Spronk, CEO of Heerema Fabrication Group:
"We are proud to bring our expertise and experience to this landmark project. The trust placed in us by TenneT, Seatrium, and GE Vernova underscores the craftsmanship of our teams and the strength of Dutch industry. Together with Heerema Marine Contractors, we are building the energy infrastructure of the future."
About the 2GW Program
TenneT’s 2GW program sets a new standard for connecting offshore wind farms to the grid. By 2032, TenneT will deliver thirteen connections in the Dutch and German North Sea. This innovative approach requires fewer platforms and cables, making construction more efficient and sustainable. Ecological measures are integrated as well, including the installation of “fish hotels” on the jackets and the application of noise-reduction techniques.
With the start of IJmuiden Ver Beta, Heerema Fabrication Group reaffirms its role as a leading Dutch partner in the realization of sustainable offshore energy.
